Now that we are moving into fall, we have an exciting number of events lined up, as well as special products gearing up to be rolled out. We have been traditionally focused on original oil and acrylic paintings on canvases with a few giclees, but this year we have decided to expand our line of fine-art work.
Giclees on canvas or on paper, Lithographs, Monotypes, Monoprints, Intaglio etchings, Relief Prints, collographs with indentations, and Linocuts will be here soon. Most of these will be in Limited quantities and not those produced with open production. These excellent fine-art products will come with certificates (COA), signed by the artist, with some even being special Artist's Proofs or Printers Proofs in the I-II or I-V series sizes or individualistic pieces of the monoprint variant.
The method of supplying ink to moist paper which creates a lithograph is quite different from the other classic and traditional methods of producing fine artwork. Most printing presses would require the artist to etch the art or letters into plates made of some form of metal or even physically carve out the work onto pieces of wood planks or end-gain or some other soft medium. Yet, to produce the creation of a lithograph there is no etching needed. The artist or printmaker would uses a special type of of greasy crayons or pencils, traditionally set with lamp black pigments, to draw the artwork (the painting lithographic print is actually a mirror of the original creation that is on the smoothed out stone). The stones usually come from, Bavaria due to the highly compressed and fine particulates of these rocks. They are also usually 3" high and can weigh up to 40 pounds for small stones. This is by far the most time-consuming part of the lithograph process.
After the specular artistic work has been detailed to the xact desires of the creator it's ready to undergo a lengthy process of fixing to be considered a lithograph. The lithographic technicalities weigh on the concept of hygroscopic and hydrophobic principles. That is that oil and water cannot mix together. The ink that is placed onto the stone or metal plate is usually based in oil and will adhere and bond to the greasy lines of the artist's crayons or painted slurry's of melted grease and pigments. Water can then be carefully moved with a cloth into the areas that are not touched by the artist. This water will stop the ink from smearing. There are times when the pigments are washed away, and only the fatty acids are left to adhere to the stones, then a fixer is added to the stone before the inking is completed. The paper usually used is cotton, and is bigger than the stone used to avoid edges or embossing during the inking process. Typically the first few prints (5-8) are not strong enough in contrast to produce appropriate images, but after those proofs are pulled production can begin on a lithographic series.
The refined, worked, and inked stone, or metal platten for extremely limited editions coated paper, are inked with light pressure to swap ink to the paper. There can be numerous stones for one print depending on the number of colors the artists wish to use.
This lithographic technique can be as extensive and intricate as the original artwork and typically low numbers of prints are created to maintain a value to the series. The numbers are always in fractional amounts of the whole series produced and can be found in pencil on the left lower or central portion of the print.
Collography (not collagraphy) is when techniques are mixed with media in a non-flexible substrate and then run through the press. Typically this is mixed with other printing techniques.
Intaglio is actually numerous printing techniques where the artwork is etched into a material. This can include he burr that pops up from the cuts or it can include only the incision into the metal or plexiglass plates. When acid is used (nitric-strong, ferric-weak, and others) the plates or matrices are usually zinc or copper plates. The process, as mentioned can be by the acid etching into the copper, the artist engraving with shaped and sharp tools, by scraping a drypoint across the surface, by spraying a fine aquatint barrier for tinting or by rocking a mezzotint scrapper across the surface to create soft blacks. In general you can also include collograph type materials into the intaglio plates for added effects. The printing of the intaglio plates are done with an application of ink and then a wiping off of the ink from the surface with the ink remaining in the cut lines. When there are burrs popping up, which are super fragile, the artist uses a tarlatan cloth. The plate is then again tamped with newspaper or even old phone books to soak up any extra surface ink. The paper is not dry, but wet/damp to be able to expand into the incisions under the intense pressure of the press. It is frequent to see different intaglio etching techniques on the same plates or in the final print.
When an artist wants to create subtle tones on the plates they can use an intaglio printmaking technique to create the subtle lines that need to hold the ink. The inked plate is passed through a printing press together with a sheet of paper, resulting in a transfer of the ink to the paper. This can be repeated a number of times, depending on the particular technique. Like etching, aquatint uses the application of acid to make the marks in the metal plate. Where the etching technique uses a needle to make lines that print in black (or whatever color ink is used), aquatint uses powdered resin which is acid resistant in the ground to create a tonal effect. The tonal variation is controlled by the level of acid exposure over large areas, and thus the image is shaped by large sections at a time. Another tonal technique, mezzotint, begins with a plate surface that is evenly indented so that it will carry a fairly dark tone of ink, then smoothing areas to make them carry less ink and thus print a lighter shade; or, beginning with a smooth plate, areas are roughened to make them darker; or, these two techniques may be combined.
An aquatint begins with a copper or zinc plate. The artist applies a ground by either dissolving powdered resin in spirits or applying the powder directly to the surface of the plate.
The plate is then heated; if the plate is covered with powder, the resin melts forming a fine and even coat; if it is in spirits, the spirits evaporate and the result is essentially the same. Now the plate is dipped in acid, producing an even and fine level of corrosion (the "bite") sufficient to hold ink. At this point, the plate is said to carry about a 50% halftone. This means that, were the plate printed with no further biting, the paper would display a gray color more or less directly in between white (no ink) and black (full ink).
At some point the artist will then etch an outline of any aspects of the drawing he wishes to establish with line; this provides the basis and guide for his later tone work. He may also have applied (at the very start, before any biting occurs) an acid-resistant "stop out" (also called an asphaltum or hard ground) if he intends to keep any areas totally white and free of ink, such as highlights.
The artist then begins immersing the plate in the acid bath, progressively stopping out (protecting from acid) any areas that have achieved the designed tonality. These tones, combined with the limited line elements, give aquatints a distinctive, watery look. Also, aquatints, like mezzotints, provide ease in creating large areas of tone without laborious cross-hatching; but aquatint plates, it is noted, are generally more durable than mezzotint plates.
The first etch should be for a short period of time (30 seconds to 1 minute, with a wide variation depending on how light the lightest tones are meant to be). A test piece may be made with etching times noted, as the strength of the etchant will vary. More than thirty minutes should produce a very dark area. Etching for many hours (up to 24) will be as dark as etching for one hour, but the deep etch would produce raised ink on the paper.
Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. The surface, or matrix, was historically a copper etching plate, but in contemporary work it can vary from zinc or glass to acrylic glass. The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing-press. Monotypes can also be created by inking an entire surface and then, using brushes or rags, removing ink to create a subtractive image, e.g. creating lights from a field of opaque color. The inks used may be oil based or water based. With oil based inks, the paper may be dry, in which case the image has more contrast, or the paper may be damp, in which case the image has a 10 percent greater range of tones.
Unlike monoprinting, monotyping produces a unique print, or monotype, because most of the ink is removed during the initial pressing. Although subsequent reprintings are sometimes possible, they differ greatly from the first print and are generally considered inferior. A second print from the original plate is called a "ghost print" or "cognate". Stencils, watercolor, solvents, brushes, and other tools are often used to embellish a monotype print. Monotypes are often spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch.
